Check the contents before cleaning again
Remove expired or spoiled food and examine containers for spills. A closed lid does not necessarily mean the outside of a container is clean. Wipe container bases before putting them back, and keep strongly scented foods in suitable covered containers.
If the smell returns when one item goes back into the fridge, address that item first. Do not use odor control to decide whether food is safe to eat.
Look beyond the shelf you can see
Follow your refrigerator manufacturer's cleaning instructions for removable shelves and drawers. Check the underside of shelves, drawer tracks and the folds of door seals. Dry the cleaned parts as directed before reinstalling them.
A drain or drip tray may also need attention, but its location and accessibility depend on the appliance. Consult the manual; do not dismantle unfamiliar electrical or mechanical parts to chase a smell.
Check whether the problem is an appliance fault
If the refrigerator is not cooling normally, has unusual leaks, or the odor seems to come from an electrical component, contact the appliance manufacturer or a qualified technician. An odor-control device will not fix a cooling, drainage or electrical problem.
